Today is the 108th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion. This remains a dark day in our city’s history, marking a catastrophic loss of life and unimaginable destruction.

In the face of this tragedy, Haligonians showed incredible resilience, unity and bravery jumping in to action to offer aid, shelter, and support to their neighbours in need. This spirit of mutual support still defines us to this day.

Lest we forget

Today, we remember and thank our service members and their families. We honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you, Fairview Legion, for the beautiful ceremony. As your provincial representative, I am honored to have been present.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

✨️🎆 Diwali 🎆✨️

A huge thank you to @ifcns and @novascotia_tamilargal_society for the kind invitation to their Diwali celebrations. It was an honor to be able to participate in such meaningful parts of the occasion.

Diwali or "Festival of Lights," is a major celebration symbolizing the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. The name literally means "a row of lights," referring to the diyas (oil lamps) lit by celebrants to illuminate homes and temples.

✨️ Happy Ethiopian New Year ✨️

We had the incredible honor of celebrating Enkutatash with the vibrant Ethiopian community yesterday. It was a beautiful and moving experience to witness the traditions and shared joy as we welcomed the new year. The food, of course, was amazing!!!!

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this special day and for the warm welcome. May the new year bring you all happiness, health, and prosperity!

What a privilege it was to attend @novavillagens’s 1st Annual Backpack Giveaway! 🎒

The smiles were infectious as children and families walked away with the tools they need to start the school year with confidence. It's more than just a backpack, it's about giving every child a chance to thrive.

This initiative is a shining example of the direct, positive impact Nova Village has on the lives of families in our community. Thank you to all the staff for your hard work and dedication, and a special thank you to @quakematthews and @rbc volunteers for the support- it was so much fun to share this special day with you all 🥰

🧡 It's always such a pleasure to get the opportunity to connect with our beautiful community 🧡 We proudly served over 300 hotdogs and chicken kebabs (marinated by yours truly) 😁

Our amazing volunteers killed it and made it all possible!

Thursday's BBQ gave us an amazing opportunity to break bread, chat, give away amazing prizes and get in some baby cuddles 🥰 Big shout out to @kristagns for dropping by 🧡

We were so happy to have had @nscece next to us to keep all the littles happy and entertained.

@fairviewmarket , thank you for hosting us!
On August 1st, we recognize Emancipation Day in Nova Scotia, a day to commemorate the 1834 abolition of slavery across the British Empire. It is a time to reflect on the lasting legacy of slavery and to recommit ourselves to the ongoing fight against systemic racism and inequality.

Let's use this day to draw attention to the unreleased environmental racism report in Nova Scotia. This report, which was commissioned to address how racism affects communities' natural environments, has been withheld from the public for over a year. The report's recommendations are crucial for the health and well-being of African Nova Scotian and Mi'kmaq communities that have been disproportionately affected by pollution and toxic waste in the communities.

On this Emancipation Day, let's not only reflect on our history but also demand action for a more just future. We must call on the government to release the environmental racism report and work towards a Nova Scotia where all communities can thrive.

✨️ Raffle Prizes ✨️

We will have prizes to giveaway at our FREE BBQ at @fairviewmarket on Thursday!

Come for a hot dog, check out the amazing vendors at the market, and a chance to win one of the awesome prizes!

Can't wait to see you all there!!
Today, I had the privilege of witnessing the incredible work of the @mobilefood_market first-hand as a volunteer. They bring fresh, affordable, and healthy food directly to communities that need it most, bridging gaps where grocery stores are scarce. It's more than just food; it's about dignity, community and access.

While the Mobile Food Market's work is vital, it also highlights a bigger issue. Here in Nova Scotia, the issue of food insecurity is a stark reality for far too many. We have the highest rates of food insecurity in Canada, a statistic that should deeply concern every resident and every level of government.

We need systemic change from the government to truly tackle food insecurity. This means:

 * Comprehensive policies addressing root causes like income and housing.

 * Increased investment in food access initiatives.
 * Stronger support for local food systems.

Community efforts are powerful, but government action is crucial for a food-secure Nova Scotia for all.

Farmer's Market Week AND Christmas in July!!

@fairviewmarket was buzzing today! As always, I tell myself I won't buy anything but who am I kidding? 😅

Today I left with @coastalcookhousens Chipotle BBQ Spice Blend (which is good on literally everything!), a delicious treat from @carlasplaceitaliangoods whose name translates to "ugly but nice", a beautiful pair of earrings from @jasmajewelry , a plant based, mango lassi flavored probiotic from @bluenose_probiotics and not pictured here but a blueberry scone from Boo Boo's Bakery that I devoured embarrassingly fast
Traffic congestion is a growing concern in Fairview- Clayton Park. As we plan for a more efficient and less stressful commute, understanding your direct experience with traffic congestion is invaluable.🚗

I'm asking all constituents within the shaded map area to complete our new traffic survey (see link in bio). It's designed to identify the "hot spots" for congestion – both location and time – and to collect your practical ideas for improving traffic flow. The more input we get, the better we can tailor our solutions.

Thank you for helping us build a better transportation network.
We're out of the office tomorrow, Monday July 21st. You can still reach us by email!

See you on Tuesday!
I stopped by @theastercafe for lunch yesterday. It has been a family favorite of ours for years! 😋

The restaurant is impossible to get to by car due to the Dutch Village Road AND Frederick Avenue closure. To get to it by car, I suggest you park on a back street like Birch Street and then walk over. I PROMISE YOU, it is very much worth it.

The Ethiopian cuisine served features traditional dishes like spicy beef stews and vegetarian options like mildly spiced lentils and vegetable combinations. Many dishes are designed to be eaten with injera, the spongy Ethiopian flatbread. They also serve traditional Ethiopian roasted coffee.

If you're contemplating what to have for lunch or dinner, I strongly urge you to check them out!
We are hosting a FREE BBQ 🌭🌯 at @fairviewmarket on Thursday July 31st!

We will have halal and vegan options available. Come for the food and a chat! Everyone is welcome 👋🏽
Community Fridays...on a Wednesday!

We stopped by @hellopetshfx , an awesome local business that, unfortunately, is feeling the hurt of the Dutch Village Road closure.

If you're in need of anything from dog and cat food to fun pet toys, make sure you pay them a visit and make a purchase! 🐕🐈‍⬛

Make sure to swipe to the end to see a feature of my Onyx waiting patiently for her beef treats from there!
Alanna and I dropped by @mcl.people 's BBQ and summer social last week before hitting the doorsteps. We had wonderful conversations with many of the participants and staff. It was a great way for us to see the amazing and positive impact MCL's work has. Thank you for the invite and all that you do!
We were at the @fairviewmarket on Thursday hosting a kids activity table! So many little artists dropped by to show off their skills, play hopscotch, and chase bubbles.
Community Friday!!

Hmm, where am I?
The Halifax West High School Class of 2025 is full of incredible talent, and I am thrilled to shine a spotlight on Meghan!

Huge congratulations to Meghan, recipient of the Youth Civic Engagement and Leadership Book Award.

Meghan's remarkable involvement over the past three years truly represents the spirit of leadership and community commitment within our graduating class. From being a primary organizer for Model Parliament and supporting Halifax West's Model UN chapter to her role as Co-President of Student Government, she's made a lasting impact.

The future is bright with young leaders like Meghan and her classmates! 💪🏽
My letter to the Minister of Labor, Skills and Immigration @nolanyoungmla @nsgov

We're seeing serious issues with Nova Scotia's PNP: major processing delays, changing priorities, and a lack of communication. This isn't just an inconvenience; it's hurting individuals, families, and our economy. We need action now to support those who've chosen NS as home!
We had the immense privilege of welcoming 48 new Canadians from 20 different countries into our national family. As someone who stood in their shoes and took my own Canadian citizenship oath just three years ago, I felt an even deeper connection to their joy and pride. These new citizens bring a wealth of diverse experiences and talents that will undoubtedly enrich Nova Scotia and all of Canada.

Making the day even more special, it was held on National Indigenous Peoples Day, in the presence of Mi’kmaq Elder Dr. Lawrence Joseph Michael.

A huge thanks to WUSC for hosting this ceremony.
